SunRisers Hyderabad’s spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, won’t play in the 2024 IPL because he hurt his left heel. He joined the team for ₹1.5 crore after leaving Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had a busy time lately. He planned to miss some IPL games to play Test cricket, but then he could play in the IPL again after getting a ban for criticizing match officials earlier.
Even though he wasn’t playing for Sri Lanka, he missed SRH’s first two matches. Now, he’s decided to skip the IPL because of his injury and focus on the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. “He is not taking part in the IPL as he needs to do some rehabilitation after meeting the podiatrist. There’s a swelling in the heel and he has been playing with injections.”
“So he has decided to get this issue sorted out before the World Cup and informed us of his decision to skip the IPL this year,” Sri Lanka CEO Ashley de Silva told The Sunday Times. Wanindu Hasaranga’s manager has refuted claims that his absence from the IPL is due to dissatisfaction over his auction price.
Despite being known as one of the premier spinners in the shortest format of the game, Hasaranga was acquired by SunRisers Hyderabad for his base price, which many considered a bargain. Just two years prior, he had secured a lucrative deal worth ₹10.75 crore and had performed exceptionally well in the 2022 IPL season, emerging as one of the leading wicket-takers.
Hasaranga’s Manager: Money Not the Reason for IPL Absence
In recent times, there have been instances where players have opted out of the tournament due to financial grievances. However, according to a report by Cricbuzz, Hasaranga’s manager emphasized that the disparity between his current and former contracts was not a factor in his decision to miss the IPL.
This assertion underscores the focus on Hasaranga’s commitment to regaining full fitness for the upcoming ICC tournament in the Caribbean and the USA, as he seeks expert medical advice in Dubai to address his injury concerns. “If money was a factor, we could have enrolled for an INR 2 crore base price. Besides, fewer games mean less money.”
“He has to take care of his ankle. He is also the captain of the national team,” Hasaranga’s manager said. SunRisers Hyderabad’s spinners right now are Shahbaz Ahmed, Washington Sundar, and Mayank Markhande. If they need to, the team can find someone else to join the spin department, like other teams have been doing because some players aren’t available.
