Mumbai Indians’ young pacer, Ashwani Kumar, had an unforgettable debut in the IPL 2025, becoming the first Indian bowler to take four wickets in his first match. Surprisingly, he did it all on an empty stomach, having only a banana before the match due to nerves.
When former India coach Ravi Shastri asked him about his lunch, Ashwani admitted he had skipped it because of the pressure. Shastri humorously advised him to always keep a banana in his kit.
Match-Winning Spell Against KKR
Ashwani’s figures of 4/24 played a crucial role in restricting the Kolkata Knight Riders to just 116 runs. He dismissed key players, including captain Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and the explosive Andre Russell.

Mumbai Indians‘ captain, Hardik Pandya, praised the franchise’s scouting team for discovering Ashwani, acknowledging their efforts in identifying young talent. Despite limited experience—having played only a few senior-level matches—Ashwani showcased remarkable skill, generating swing and bounce that troubled the KKR batters.
Mumbai’s Dominant Chase and KKR’s Struggles
Mumbai chased the target comfortably, led by South African batsman Ryan Rickelton’s aggressive 62 off 41 balls. New Zealand pacer Trent Boult set the tone by dismissing Sunil Narine in the first over.
KKR suffered a batting collapse, with only a few contributions from Manish Pandey (19) and Ramandeep Singh (22). Skipper Rahane admitted it was a collective failure, as 180-190 would have been a competitive score. Mumbai’s middle order, including Suryakumar Yadav’s quick 27 off nine balls, ensured an easy win with seven overs to spare.
Kane Williamson praised Mumbai Indians (MI) for their dominant eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2025 match at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. Speaking to JioHotstar, he described it as a complete performance, highlighting MI’s effective execution after winning the toss and opting to bowl first.
He particularly commended the decision to include an extra seamer, Ashwani, who delivered an outstanding performance. Williamson emphasized MI’s ability to take wickets at regular intervals, calling it the most satisfying aspect of their gameplay, which ultimately led to their convincing win over KKR.
