IPL 2025 Final Venue Under Review; Kolkata Could Miss Out

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Final might be relocated to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, based on the reportedly updated schedule. The mid-season halt has pushed the tournament’s conclusion by a few days, with May 30 currently being considered as the new date for the final.

Originally, the prestigious Eden Gardens in Kolkata was slated to host the final on May 25. However, if the date shifts to May 30, adverse weather forecasts may prevent the venue from accommodating the event. As per a PTI report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the option of shifting the final to the Narendra Modi Stadium.

“Kolkata might lose #IPL final to Ahmedabad. The reason being inclement weather on May 30 as per Accu Weather. Cloudy weather and rainfall predicted on that day. Also Ahmedabad’s capacity is a good 30,000 more. It’s being discussed,” the report reads.

A similar situation happened before when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the IPL in 2021. In 2022, the tournament was not played in the regular home-and-away format because of COVID-19. So, CSK’s home ground, Chepauk Stadium, didn’t get to host any playoff matches. Instead, those matches were held in Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

A comparable situation occurred when Chennai Super Kings clinched the title in 2021. Due to the IPL 2022 season not being played in the usual home-and-away formati because of COVID-19 restrictions, the Chepauk Stadium was denied hosting rights, with playoff fixtures instead being held in Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Narendra Modi Stadium Previously Hosted IPL Finals in 2022 and 2023

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is in line to host its third consecutive IPL final, having already staged the title clashes in 2022 and 2023. The venue was granted the 2022 final after the league stage that year was entirely held in Mumbai.

Following Gujarat Titans’ triumph over Rajasthan Royals in 2022, the stadium retained hosting rights for the 2023 final as well. In contrast, Kolkata’s Eden Gardens has previously been the site for the IPL finals in 2013 and 2015.
