A close four-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens has reignited tensions between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). The match, held on April 8, saw a massive total of 238 by LSG, while KKR fell just short with 234.
This high-scoring game once again brought attention to the pitch conditions at Eden Gardens, which have been a point of disagreement throughout the season. KKR had expected spin-friendly pitches to support their bowling strategy, but the matches so far have been played on flat tracks that favour batters. This latest game only added to the team’s frustration, with many in the KKR camp believing the pitch played a key role in their loss.
Mocking Remarks Spark Further Conflict
According to a report by Sangbad Pratidin, emotions ran high after the game, leading to a sharp exchange between KKR and CAB officials. One KKR official, upset about the pitch, sarcastically remarked to a CAB counterpart that they must be pleased with the result. When asked what they meant, the KKR official said the Eden Gardens curator should be given the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

This sarcastic comment was meant to highlight the belief that the flat pitch had helped the visiting team and cost KKR the match. The ongoing disagreement between KKR management and Eden Gardens’ chief curator Sujan Mukherjee has been growing, as the franchise continues to push for spin-friendly surfaces which they feel would suit their team better.
CAB’s Response and Future Plans
In response to the criticism, CAB officials explained that they cannot create extremely spin-friendly pitches without damaging the ground in the long term. They also mentioned the importance of maintaining pitch quality with the 2026 T20 World Cup approaching. CAB’s focus, they said, is on ensuring a balanced playing surface rather than catering to one team’s preferences.
However, as per the same report, efforts are being made to prepare a drier, spin-friendly pitch for KKR’s next home match against Gujarat Titans on April 21. Whether this change will ease the tension between the two sides remains to be seen, but for now, the relationship between KKR and CAB appears strained, with pitch conditions continuing to be a major point of disagreement.
