The thrilling encounter in Dharamshala between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) has now been rerouted to Ahmedabad. The Indian Premier League (IPL) confirmed on Thursday, May 8, that Match No. 61 will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat.
A Historical Venue for the IPL
Over the years, Dharamshala has played host to several iconic IPL fixtures. The elevation often plays a role in how the ball behaves. The IPL press release cited “logistical challenges” for the venue change. While that might sound vague, it refers to serious concerns involving team travel, security, and operations.
One of the key issues was the closure of the Dharamshala airport due to Operation Sindoor, a military strike carried out by India against terror sites in Pakistan. Without an operational airport, moving two full teams becomes nearly impossible.

Security Concerns After Operation Sindoor
Given Dharamshala’s proximity to the border, hosting a major sporting event there just days after a military operation posed a risk. India’s response via Operation Sindoor was a retaliation to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Nine terror sites were struck, raising nationwide security alerts.
BCCI’s Contingency Plan in Action
With limited time to spare, the BCCI reached out to the Gujarat Cricket Association. They quickly offered the Narendra Modi Stadium, which has world-class infrastructure. The world’s largest cricket stadium by seating capacity, this venue was a no-brainer. With a 132,000 capacity, Ahmedabad is ready for a blockbuster.

Punjab Kings Performance In IPL 2025
Punjab Kings (PBKS) have been one of the most consistent teams in IPL 2025, delivering strong performances throughout the season. PBKS have dominated several matches, securing crucial wins to stay in the playoff race. Currently, PBKS sit comfortably in the top four of the points table, positioning themselves as serious contenders for the playoffs.
Mumbai Indians Performance In IPL 2025
Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a mixed campaign in IPL 2025, showing flashes of brilliance but struggling with consistency. After a six-match winning streak, their momentum took a hit with a loss to Gujarat Titans in a rain-curtailed match. Despite this setback, MI remains firmly in the playoff race, currently sitting fourth in the points table with 14 points from 12 matches and a strong net run rate of +1.156. With just a few matches left, MI will need to bounce back quickly to secure a top-four finish and keep their title hopes alive.
