Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series in England, starting June 20. Following this announcement, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla clarified that the decision was entirely personal and not influenced by the Board.
Shukla emphasized, “As far as Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket is concerned, he has made his own decision. It is our policy that the players who take the decision of retirement — we do not put any pressure on them, nor do we suggest anything, nor do we say anything.”
Rohit’s retirement has sparked various discussions, but the BCCI made it clear that the move was not forced or advised by them.
Rohit Sharma’s Test Career and Contributions
Rohit Sharma has been a major figure in Indian cricket, especially in white-ball formats. However, his journey in Test cricket was a mix of success and struggle. Rajeev Shukla praised Rohit’s efforts in the longest format, noting his significant contributions.
“The more we praise him, the less it is. He is a great batsman. The good thing is that he has not yet decided to retire from cricket (will play only ODIs).”
“So we will definitely take advantage of his experience and talent.” Rohit’s Test career began in 2013, six years after his international debut, despite making a name for himself in domestic cricket. His Test journey was filled with highs and lows—dominating performances at home and inconsistent form overseas. He had the skill and flair, but consistency remained an issue throughout.
Future Leadership and Rohit’s Legacy
With Rohit stepping down from Tests, the Indian team will now need a new captain. Names like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill are being considered, but the BCCI made it clear that this decision rests entirely with the selectors. “There should not be any speculations. The selectors will decide and tell you who the captain is… it is solely and purely their call.”
As fans and experts reflect on Rohit’s Test career, it is remembered for its moments of brilliance and frustrating inconsistency. He thrilled home audiences with remarkable innings but struggled to deliver the same impact abroad. His Test career reflects both the immense promise he showed and the challenges he faced in living up to it consistently, making him one of the more complex characters in Indian cricket history.
