Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir posted a heartfelt tribute to Rohit Sharma after the latter announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday, May 7. The two had previously worked together during India’s final Test series—the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
They also shared success in lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy. Following Rohit’s announcement, Gautam Gambhir expressed his admiration through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“A master, a leader & a gem! #RohitSharma,” he wrote with a picture of Rohit playing for India in whites.

India will tour England for a five-Test series in June 2025, right after the current IPL season ends. Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and spot in the team had come under scrutiny following his poor form and India’s disappointing performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
However, those doubts have now been settled, as Rohit has decided to step away from Test cricket. Having already retired from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup, he will now focus solely on representing India in ODIs.
A glance at Rohit Sharma’s Test journey with Team India
Rohit Sharma began his Test career for India in 2013, debuting against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He had an impressive start, scoring 177 in his debut match and an unbeaten 111 in his second. However, he didn’t become a regular in the Test squad immediately and had to earn his place over time.
Across his Test career, Rohit featured in 67 matches, amassing 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57. His record includes 12 centuries and 18 fifties, with a highest score of 212. At home, Rohit scored 2,535 runs at an impressive average of 51.73, including 10 centuries and eight half-centuries.
Away from home, he scored 1,644 runs at an average of 31.01, with two centuries and 10 fifties. He also made 122 runs at neutral venues. Rohit will miss the upcoming England Test series. Despite recent poor form, his absence will be felt. He leaves behind a strong legacy as one of India’s top Test performers.
