Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakravarthy has been fined 25% of his match fee and has been handed a demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. The matter occurred during the match against Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. His demeaning action came following the dismissal of Dewald Brevis, wherein, in his celebration, Chakravarthy pointed at the batsman, which caught the attention of the Match Referee.

The game was an absolute thriller. KKR set a target of 180, CSK chased 183/8 in 19.4 overs to win by two wickets. Chakravarthy bowled well, equally well at two for 18 from his four overs. But whatever has happened does not increase KKR’s chances with the nail-biting loss.

Varun Chakravarthy Penalized for IPL Code of Conduct Breach

For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the decision of the Match Referee shall be final and binding. Varun Chakravarthy admitted to the offense under Article 2.5 and accepted the sanction. This penalty goes onto Chakravarthy’s record, and repeated breaches would attract stiffer penalties.

Fines and demerit points serve as reminders to the players to act with decorum and sportsmanship during matches. The Match Referee felt that Chakravarthy’s actions, albeit seemingly celebratory, went overboard. It is in keeping with the IPL Code of Conduct that the game should be respected and be played with integrity.

With this loss, KKR’s chances of playoffs have taken a big hit. They now face must-win clashes against SRH and RCB, both away games, and their fate will now lie on other results doing them a favor. Currently placed 6th on the points table with 11 points from 12 matches, it would take a miracle to see them in the playoffs.
