Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the inclusion of 29-year-old spinner Shivam Shukla as a replacement for West Indies all-rounder Rovman Powell for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.
The announcement was made following Powell’s unavailability due to a medical procedure, which also rules out England’s Moeen Ali from returning this season. With the league resuming after a brief suspension caused by India-Pakistan border tensions, Shukla’s addition is seen as a timely reinforcement for the squad.
A Promising Yet Inexperienced Spinner
Shivam Shukla may not be a household name, but his recent performances have generated buzz. He has played just one season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he claimed eight wickets in as many games, with a notable 4-29 spell against Bengal.
His reputation as a mystery spinner gained further traction during the Madhya Pradesh Premier League, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 10 scalps, including a five-wicket haul. Although his domestic experience is limited, Shukla’s current form and knack for breakthroughs have earned him a chance to prove himself on the big stage with KKR.
KKR’s Campaign Faces Challenges Amid Revised Schedule
KKR’s title defence has hit several roadblocks, including a washout match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which coincided with the resumption of IPL 2025.
The washout proved costly, as it altered the playoff dynamics significantly. RCB climbed to the top of the points table with 17 points from 12 matches, surpassing Gujarat Titans (16 points) and Punjab Kings (15 points), both of whom have a match in hand.
The disruption in the schedule has also meant several overseas players, like Powell and Moeen Ali, are now unavailable due to medical concerns or international commitments. KKR will play their final league fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 25 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, hoping to end the season on a strong note and keep their playoff hopes alive.
