After a disappointing defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad made an unexpected comment regarding the match outcome. CSK faced a significant loss, with RCB achieving their first victory at CSK’s home ground in 17 years.
The match showcased RCB’s dominance, leaving CSK struggling to keep up. In the aftermath of the game, Gaikwad’s remarks raised eyebrows as he expressed relief that the loss was “just 50 runs,” suggesting a strange sense of optimism despite the heavy defeat.
Reflections on Performance and Conditions
In his post-match comments, Gaikwad elaborated on the match conditions, stating that he believed a score of 170 was reasonable for the pitch. He noted that batting was not straightforward, and poor fielding played a significant role in the team’s downfall.

“When you’re chasing 170, you have a little more time,” he explained, emphasizing that the extra runs required altered their approach during the power play. He acknowledged that the pitch became slower and stickier as the game progressed, which affected their batting strategy. Gaikwad also mentioned that both he and his teammate Rahul backed their shots, but sometimes, the outcome is unpredictable.
Need for Improvement and Future Focus
Gaikwad recognized the need for significant improvement in the team’s fielding, admitting that dropped catches and boundaries allowed RCB to maintain their momentum throughout the match. He stressed the importance of enhancing their fielding skills to avoid similar situations in the future.
Despite the loss, he maintained a positive outlook, reiterating that the margin of defeat was not excessively large. He pointed out that having three world-class spinners in the team could have changed the dynamics, as new batters would ideally face them.
Looking ahead, Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged the upcoming challenge of traveling to Guwahati for their next match and emphasized the necessity of mental preparation and identifying areas for improvement. His comments reflect a blend of disappointment and determination, as CSK aims to bounce back stronger in their subsequent games.
