During a press conference, English cricketer Sam Billings was asked to compare the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) by a Pakistani journalist. Billings, who is currently playing for Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, responded with a playful remark, suggesting the journalist wanted him to “say something silly.” He then asserted that IPL is the best T20 competition in the world, leaving no doubt about his stance on the debate.
Sam Billings’ Witty Yet Honest Reply
Without missing a beat, Billings chuckled and said, “You want me to say something silly?” before going on to declare, “It is difficult to ignore IPL as the best competition in the world, it is very clear, every other competition is behind it.” That one comment sent social media and cricket forums into a frenzy. Supporters from both India and Pakistan jumped in to defend their turf. Billings may have said it in jest, but the impact was no joke.
“You know, in England, we are trying to do the same like PSL as the second-best competition in the world, Big Bash too trying to do the same,” Billings said.
A Tale of Two Leagues – IPL vs PSL
IPL was launched in 2008 and it took the cricket world by storm. Backed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it brought glitz, glamour, and game like never before. However PSL was founded in 2015 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the PSL has shown impressive growth. It began in the UAE due to security reasons but now dazzles stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and beyond. The IPL boasts 10 franchises, each representing major Indian cities, backed by Bollywood stars, industrialists, and global investors. The PSL, with its six teams, is more compact but fiercely competitive.
Why the IPL Stands Tall
The IPL is a global event — watched by millions across continents. From New York to Nairobi, fans wear their team jerseys with pride. Some of the greatest cricketers — from AB de Villiers to Ben Stokes — have graced the IPL. Even cricket legends make it a point to participate. IPL contracts run into millions. It’s not unusual to see players earning more in the IPL season than their national contracts. IPL is more than cricket. It’s halftime shows, celebrity owners, team anthems, and killer marketing. PSL is catching up, but IPL is already a global brand. From Spidercam to fan polls, the IPL knows how to keep things fresh. High-quality broadcasts in multiple languages ensure nobody misses the action.
PSL – A Rising Contender
The PSL has been instrumental in discovering gems like Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan. It’s a launchpad for local talent. If you’re a fan of thrillers, PSL doesn’t disappoint. Nail-biters and Super Overs are common fare. Despite its relatively short history, PSL has a passionate fan base, especially in Pakistan where cricket is a religion.

Other T20 Leagues Around the World
Australia’s BBL is known for high-quality cricket and strong domestic support. However, it lacks the global pull of the IPL. South Africa’s new league shows promise, but it’s still early days in terms of global traction. The Hundred (England), an innovative format, but it’s still finding its feet among the cricket community.
Sam Billings might’ve joked about being baited into a silly comment, but his honest take echoed what many already believe — the Indian Premier League stands alone at the top. From revenue to reach, from players to production value, IPL is the undisputed champion of T20 leagues.
