In a playful response to a clever query from ex-Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Joe Root jokingly mentioned contemplating a flashy reverse-scoop shot when he was at 96 during the fourth Test against India in Ranchi.
Prior to this match, Root had received substantial criticism from English media and pundits for attempting the reverse-scoop in Rajkot. Following his struggles to surpass 30 in the initial four innings, some pundits even questioned his suitability for ‘BazBall,’ referring to Brendon McCullum’s coaching approach.
Upon reaching his century on a challenging pitch, Gavaskar commented during the broadcast, suggesting that Root should have attempted the shot to silence his critics. Later, during a post-play interaction on Saturday, Gavaskar proposed the idea to Root, who responded:
“It did cross my mind (laughs). But on that wicket it’s not a great option. The previous wicket wasn’t that bad but unfortunately it kept a bit low. But that’s how it goes sometimes. Glad to contribute this week – it’s been a lean series for me. I was desperate to do it for the boys. Hope I can carry on for the rest of the series.”
Root concluded the innings undefeated at 122 (274), displaying a cautious approach with minimal risks. As Day 3 concluded, his score stood as the highest in the Test, while India finished the day at 219-7 when they went to Stumps.
“I think that’s how I try to play every game – play the conditions and the situation of the game. Thankfully it paid off,” he added.
The ex-captain additionally commented that the pitch in Ranchi was progressively worsening, adding to the increasing challenge for batsmen.

Despite the favorable conditions on the pitch for him, Ben Stokes didn’t rely heavily on Joe Root’s bowling, primarily due to the excellent performances of his lead spinners, Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley, who bowled extended spells. Root did deliver a single over right before Stumps, but Stokes promptly reintroduced Bashir from that end.
“I think I’ve abused his (Stokes) body as well when I was captain so he can do what he wants to with me as a bowler,” he said.
Regarding Bashir, who achieved a career-first by taking four wickets, the right-handed player stated:
“He’s brilliant. He’s great to have in the group. I’ve not seen much of him or known much of him before this series but he has great character.”
”He’s clearly got a huge amount of ability and skill and a lot to offer especially on a surface like this. It’s great to see him coming at the batters again and again and he should take this confidence going forward.”
