Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will be a tempting but risky option as Royal challengers Bangalore captain for IPL 2022. Incidentally, the position remains vacant after Virat Kohli relinquished his duties after IPL 2021.
Meanwhile, the Royal Challengers have retained Mohammed Siraj apart from Kohli and Maxwell. With Kohli not open to leadership duties, the management will either have to search for a viable option or hand over the duties to the Aussie all-rounder.
During a discussion on the Star Sports show Game Plan, Aakash Chopra was asked whether Maxwell could be a captaincy option for the three-time finalists. The 44-year-old replied:
“It is a tempting but risky option. They will have to figure out the risks and rewards, whether you want to go in that direction for a simple reason – if you see Glenn Maxwell’s performance in the IPL in the last 10 years, it has been a five-year plan.”
Aakash Chopra highlighted Glenn Maxwell’s inconsistency in form as one of the main reasons behind not handing the leadership duties to the Aussie cricketer.
“One year and then silent for four years, then the fifth year is very good, which was the case last year. Can you go with a guarantee towards the next year, I am not 100% certain, I am sure it will definitely be in their thoughts.”
The Victorian had a remarkable season with Royal Challengers Bangalore last season, scoring 513 runs at an impressive strike rate of 144.10 last season.
Meanwhile, RCB will also be without one of their batting mainstays AB de Villiers, who announced his retirement from all forms of the game after IPL 2021.
The IPL 2022 mega auction is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru on Febaruary 12 and 13.
