David Warner, an Australian cricketer who has his sights set on the 2018 Ashes, says he still has a lot of playing left in him and has no plans to retire.
Prior to having to return to Australia due to an elbow fracture, Warner was a member of the Australian team competing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in India. In Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium during the second Test, he had also sustained a concussion. Australia was defeated by six wickets in the second Test. In the end, Warner was unable to pick up where he left off on Day 2.
“I’ve always said I’m playing to 2024; if the selectors feel that I’m not worthy of my spot, then so be it, and I can push on to the white-ball stuff,” Warner said to reporters at the Sydney Airport.

The daring left-handed batter expressed excitement about taking part in the upcoming Ashes trip of England. Warner made the audacious claim that he would not mind switching to the white-ball format if the selectors sought to bypass him or shorten his career in red-ball cricket.
“I’ve got the next 12 months, a lot of cricket is ahead for the team. And if I can keep scoring runs and putting my best foot forward for the team and I can hold on to my spot, it’d be great for the team. It’s easy pickings (for critics) when you’re 36, and turning 37. I’ve seen it before with the ex-players as well. So, for me, if I’m taking pressure off the rest of the other guys, and no one’s worrying about the rest of the team, I’m happy to do that,” he added.
Warner is one of many Australian cricketers who have come back from the Test series against India in the middle. Ashton Agar will play for Western Australia in domestic cricket, while Josh Hazlewood has also returned to recover from an Achilles injury.
