‘DRS Turned To Be Like VAR’, Jack Leach After Umpiring Blunder on Day 1

Jack Leach was extremely frustrated after the third umpire gave Ajinkya Rahane not out after a DRS referral. The England spinner strongly believed Rahane was out after one angle suggested that the ball made an impact with the bat. However, the third umpire Anil Chaudhary missed out on seeing that particular angle and gave his decision as not-out.

After the controversial umpiring blunder Jack Leach said that the DRS worked like a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which is a referral system in football. VAR has created a lot of disagreements in football since it’s inception and many have also claimed that it is taking the fun away from football.

The England spinner thought that Rahane should have been given out but the umpire made a blunder and England couldn’t do anything about it. Luckily the umpires realised the mistake and gave England their lost review back. The decision didn’t prove costly as England clean bowled Rahane on 67 in the very next over.

“We were trying to get the third umpire to roll it through, they were checking LBW, we knew that would have been not out, we were just trying to get them looking at what happened after the ball hit his pad. It is a bit like VAR today, still controversial, it is what it is”, said Leach during a virtual press conference on Saturday.

“They said they were checking it, then the LBW picture came up, we were saying no, no. We wanted to check them the other one. I got the impression that they hadn’t checked it (the angle we wanted the umpires to check). There is nothing I can do about it, at that time, I was angry but to get Rahane’s wicket in the next over, made a things little easier”, added Leach.

Meanwhile, talking about the day’s play Leach lauded Rohit Sharma for scoring an outstanding century on a challenging wicket. He added that England will be looking to pick wickets early tomorrow and get back in the contest. India will resume batting on 300-6 on day 2 with Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel at the crease.

“It was a hard-fought day, we had to be patient throughout the day, we got a couple of wickets towards the end and it was good, with the new ball hopefully tomorrow morning, we can get a couple of wickets quickly and get back. As you saw with Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, once you get a partnership going, it can get a little bit easier, we have to hope that we can do the same when we come to bat”, said Leach.

“Compared to the first wicket, we played on, I would say that the pitch is turning a bit more, the wicket seems a little bit drier and it is spinning. Rohit played a serious knock, he is obviously a world-class player, to see how he went about it, he batted well”, Leach concluded.
