Jadeja Reacts With a Cheeky Response On Test Captaincy Aspirations

Ravindra Jadeja, one of India’s most experienced Test players, was recently asked if he harbors any ambitions of becoming the captain of the Indian Test side. His reply was both light-hearted and telling. With a smile, he said, “Abhi to filhaal aisa kuch dimag me nahi hai. Bas yehi dimag me hai ki 2-3 wicket mil jaaye lunch se pehle” (Right now, I don’t have any such thought in mind. I am just thinking of taking 2–3 wickets before lunch). The cheeky comment drew laughs from fans and reporters alike, showing Jadeja’s grounded and focused mindset.

The question came in the backdrop of speculation around India’s future Test captaincy after Rohit Sharma. While younger players like Shubman Gill are being groomed for leadership roles, Jadeja’s seniority made him a natural name in the discussion. However, his response clearly indicated that he isn’t eyeing the top spot and is more interested in performing his role efficiently.

Focusing on the Process, Not the Position

Jadeja elaborated on how cricket is a game where fortunes can change quickly, and focusing on the basics remains the key. He remarked, “Result kabhi kabhi hamare haath me nahi hota hai. Kabhi-kabhi partnership lambi ho jaati hai. Kabhi-kabhi 1-2 wickets mil jaati hai. Par hume poori koshish karni chahiye ki hum unko pressure me daalein”(Sometimes, the result is not in our hands. Sometimes, partnerships stretch long; sometimes, we get quick wickets. But we should make every effort to put them under pressure).

His emphasis on discipline and persistence rather than positions or accolades reflects a mature approach. Jadeja underlined the importance of maintaining the right rhythm and sticking to team strategies over getting swayed by leadership talk or speculation.

Team First Mentality and Leadership Through Performance

While he may not be chasing the captain’s armband, Jadeja continues to be a leader in his own right—through action. His ability to stay focused, contribute across departments, and inspire teammates with energy is a testament to his value in the squad.

Ravindra Jadeja may not be eyeing the captaincy, but his presence and performance continue to play a crucial leadership role for Team India. As he put it, “Bas dimag me yehi hai ki 2-3 wicket nikal le lunch se pehle”—his only goal right now is to make an impact on the field, session by session.
