His car was parked outside the team hotel in Edgbaston, luckily he remained unaffected both physically and mentally. During a radio show, BBC journalist Agnew broke out the news and revealed that he received a text from frontman Stuart Broad.

Anderson was ruled out of England”s last Test against Ireland due to an injury to the calf muscle that he sustained while playing for Lancashire in the domestic circuit. Broad was on the money, triggering a major collapse as Australia found themselves at 122/8.

Australia pulled back things

But a rescue act by Steven Smith helped the visitors get to 284. Smith, who made a return to Test cricket following a 12-month suspension, looked like a man on a mission. He hit 16 fours and 2 sixes and went on to score 144.

Pacer Broad, who scalped five wickets in the first innings, briefed the media post the day”s play. The pacer said Anderson was a bit “distraught” on missing out. “He’s not had the results back yet,” said Stuart Broad after stumps. “He is down, he is frustrated. He actually came and said sorry to all the bowlers, not that he has got anything to be sorry for.” Broad told the reporters.

“He is distraught he could not have been out there today, but I don’t know the next step with it. All we can hope is the news is better than we expect.” he added.

Anderson bowled just four overs and conceded one run. He started off by bowling a sharp outswinger to David Warner. The opener failed to read the delivery and looked at sea.
