New Zealand has announced its squad for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies, starting Wednesday at Eden Park in Auckland. The team sees the return of Kyle Jamieson and Ish Sodhi, bringing experience and depth back into the lineup. Jamieson makes his comeback after recovering from a side injury that kept him out of the ODI series against England.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed confidence in the pacer’s readiness, stating, “Kyle’s been back bowling this week and is tracking nicely for this series.” Ish Sodhi, New Zealand’s most capped T20I player, also returns to the squad after last featuring against Australia in October. Walter praised his impact, saying, “Ish is our most capped T20I player and it’s always great to be able to add his skills, energy and experience to the group.”
New Faces And Strategic Rest
Uncapped all-rounder Nathan Smith has earned a place in the 14-member squad and could make his T20I debut. The coach spoke highly of his progress, noting, “Nathan’s made an impressive start to his international career in the Test and ODI formats and we back him to do the job if he gets his T20 chance in this series.”
Meanwhile, Matt Henry, who missed the last two ODIs against England due to a calf strain, will skip the series to complete a pre-planned conditioning block ahead of the upcoming ODI and Test series. Several key players, including Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring), remain unavailable due to injuries, prompting the selectors to test bench strength ahead of a busy international schedule.
Kane Williamson Bids Farewell To T20Is
Kane Williamson was not considered for selection after announcing his retirement from T20 Internationals earlier in the day. Walter paid tribute to the veteran, saying, “His contribution to the team in this format has been immense, both in terms of his runs and leadership. To have captained the T20 side in 75 of his 93 games gives an indication of his influence and service to the side.”
The upcoming five-match T20I series will be New Zealand’s last before Walter finalises his preliminary squad for the ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026. The coach emphasised the importance of building momentum, remarking, “It’s great to have five opportunities to take on a dangerous side like the West Indies.” The visiting West Indies team will arrive in New Zealand on Sunday to play five T20Is, three ODIs, and a three-Test series leading up to Christmas.
