West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has been fined 15% of his match fee for an animated send-off directed at Australian skipper Pat Cummins during the Barbados Test. The fiery incident occurred after Seales dismissed Cummins in Australia’s first innings, celebrating by gesturing towards the pavilion in a manner deemed inappropriate.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) found his actions to be in breach of its Code of Conduct, specifically under Level 1 offence, which pertains to conduct that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter. Seales accepted the charges, avoiding a formal hearing, and the penalty was imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
Second Offence Adds to Seales’ Record
This isn’t the first time Seales has faced disciplinary action. The Barbados incident has earned him one more demerit point, making it his second within 24 months. The earlier infraction occurred in a Test match against Bangladesh on December 3, 2024, in Kingston.
With this latest offence, Seales’ conduct will be closely monitored going forward. The charge was specifically under Article 2.5 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, which addresses gestures or language that might be seen as disrespectful or provocative following a dismissal. Since Seales accepted responsibility for his behaviour, the situation was resolved without a disciplinary hearing.
Tensions Rise Amid Umpiring Concerns
The Test match itself has been marred by a series of controversial umpiring decisions, particularly those made by TV umpire Adrian Holdstock. Frustration with inconsistent DRS outcomes reportedly led West Indies head coach Daren Sammy to approach match referee Srinath to express concerns. The send-off incident involving Seales is seen by many as part of a broader rise in on-field tension during the match.
Despite the off-field drama, West Indies bowlers dominated the Australian batting line-up, with both Seales and Shamar Joseph delivering impressive performances. Australia were bowled out for just 180 in their first innings and were struggling at 92/4 in their second innings by the end of Day 2, still trailing the hosts by 82 runs.
