England skipper Joe Root was not a happy man after the end of the day’s play on day 1 of the Pink-Ball Test. A couple of key decisions went against them in which the third umpire Shamshuddin had a role to play. India ended day one on 99 for 3 when they could have easily been five down had right decisions being made. Post the day’s end Root with England coach Chris Silverwood spoke to the ICC match referee, Srinath after seeing two decisions going India’s way without the third umpire giving enough time and attention in the case of Rohit Sharma’s stumping appeal. 

England players had a problem with the third umpire not reviewing the decision from all possible angle and the third umpire reaching to a decision on a haste. Shamsuddin who appeared to have reached his conclusions into the two matters quite quickly without spending much time in assessing all angles involved.

Joe Root Frustrated With Double-Standard Umpiring

Joe Root was questioning the umpire at the bowlers end as and asking for transparency and consistency in decisions despite the umpires having all the luxury to make proper decisions.

“The England captain and head coach spoke with the match referee after play.The captain and head coach acknowledged the challenges the umpires faced and asked respectfully that in making any decisions there was consistency in the process. The match referee said the captain was asking the right questions of the umpires” an England team spokesperson told ESPNCricinfo.

Meanwhile, before the decision of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill was ruled not out after Ben Stokes had seemingly grounded the ball in his attempt to take the catch. With that decision going against England left Root infuriated and frustrated on the umpiring standards.

Meanwhile, Zak Crawley pointed out that an example of Jack Leach where his catch was seen from many different angles but such was not the case with Rohit’s decision. 

The ICC decided to have home umpires for bilateral tours with the unavailability of neutral umpires due to the ongoing pandemic. The apex body has also given an extra review per innings to both teams so that correct umpiring standards are maintained. However, the inexperience of India umpires to officiate high-profile matches was on show once again.
