England fast bowler Jofra Archer is expected to be absent from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024 as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) aims to handle his workload in preparation for the T20 World Cup, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Archer has been sidelined from professional cricket for most of the year due to a persistent elbow injury, with his last appearance in May 2023. Although he traveled with the England team as a reserve player, he stayed in India for a week, still grappling with pain.
Released by the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians before the auction, Jofra Archer, in IPL 2023, was anticipated by fans to showcase his best and lead MI to their sixth trophy.
However, injuries hampered his season, impacting his performance. Across five matches, he managed only two wickets and proved susceptible to batter’s hits.

Archer’s participation in the Ashes series was also halted due to his medical condition. Scans exposed a recurring stress fracture in his right elbow, forcing him to end his time in the current edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Mumbai Indians prematurely.
According to ESPNcricinfo, “Archer did not feature among the list of over 1000 names – including 34 England players – who have registered for the IPL auction that takes place in Dubai on December 19 as the ECB told Archer not to enter the auction.”
Regarding the other English players, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Jason Roy, Mark Wood, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley were retained by their IPL franchises in preparation for the upcoming auction.
In contrast, all-rounder Ben Stokes and star batsman Joe Root chose not to participate in the tournament.
