‘Just Going Out And Playing’ – Steve Smith’s Take On Silencing The Crowd

Ahead of Australia’s high-stakes ICC Champions Trophy semifinal clash against India, Steve Smith addressed the media and was asked about plans to silence the Indian crowd, a topic Pat Cummins had previously brought up before the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

Unlike Cummins, Smith had a straightforward response, stating, “Yeah, I don’t really have a message to be honest. Just going out and playing, and hopefully, we can put on a good show.” With India coming into the match unbeaten, Smith acknowledged their strong performance and the challenges that lay ahead.

India’s Familiarity With Conditions in Dubai

Smith also discussed whether India’s experience in Dubai gave them an advantage. Since India had played all their matches at the venue, they were well-acquainted with the pitch behavior. Smith noted that the surface was quite dry and had undergone heavy usage, based on his conversation with the groundsman.

He admitted that this factor could benefit India, given their prior exposure to such conditions. However, he remained optimistic about Australia’s chances, emphasizing that it would be an exciting contest.

Tackling India’s Spin Challenge

One of the biggest hurdles for Australia in the semifinal would be countering India’s spin attack, particularly mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who played a crucial role in India’s previous match against New Zealand. When asked about a strategy to deal with him, Smith highlighted the importance of handling spin well during the middle overs.

“Yeah, I mean, I think not just Chakravarthy, I think the rest of the spinners are quality as well. The game will probably be won or lost on how we handle spin, especially in the middle overs,” he explained.

Acknowledging that the pitch would likely be slow and assist spinners, Smith said the team had multiple approaches in mind and would adapt accordingly on match day. Whether to bat or bowl first was still undecided, but he emphasized that effectively playing spin would be the key to Australia’s success in the game.
