India and Australia are set to face off in the first semifinal of the 2025 Champions Trophy on Tuesday, March 4, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The last time these two teams met in a completed Champions Trophy match was in the 2006 edition.

It was a group-stage match held in Mohali, where India batted first and posted 249/8 in 50 overs. Virender Sehwag top-scored with 65 off 90 balls, while captain Rahul Dravid contributed a crucial 52. Australia’s bowling attack saw Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, and Nathan Bracken take two wickets each, while Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson claimed one apiece.

In reply, Australia comfortably chased the target in 45.4 overs with six wickets in hand. Damien Martyn anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73 off 104 balls, supported by half-centuries from Ricky Ponting (58) and Shane Watson (50).

Sreesanth was India’s most successful bowler, taking 2/43, while Irfan Pathan and Dinesh Mongia picked up a wicket each. Australia went on to win the 2006 Champions Trophy, defeating West Indies in the final.

India vs Australia Champions Trophy head-to-head record

India and Australia have faced each other four times in Champions Trophy history. Their first encounter was in the 1998 quarter-final in Dhaka, where India set a target of 307/8 and bowled Australia out for 263, securing a 44-run victory. In the 2000 edition, they met again in the quarter-finals in Nairobi.

India posted 265/9 and successfully defended it, bowling out Australia for 245 to win by 20 runs. Their next clash came in the 2006 Champions Trophy, which was also their last completed match in the tournament. Australia won convincingly by six wickets.

The most recent meeting was in the 2009 edition at Centurion, where Australia reached 234/4 in 42.3 overs before rain forced the match to be abandoned. Heading into the 2025 semifinal, India lead the head-to-head record with two wins, while Australia have one victory, and one match ended without a result.
