Lead South African pacer Kagiso Rabada has been included in the Test squad for the second Test match against Sri Lanka. Rabada returns to the squad after recovering from a groin injury to play in the second Test starting from on January 3. The protean nation find themselves in a good position after Day 4 of the Boxing-Day test match against the island nation. Sri Lanka are on the backfoot trailing in their second innings by 160 runs still.

Rabada has not played a red-ball match since January when he featured in the third Test against England in Port Elizabeth. He was banned from the final match at the Wanderers after an accumulation of demerit points which makes the last time he played a Test at his home ground in January 2019, against Pakistan.

South Africa have went in with just one specialist spinner in the first test, Keshav Maharaj. He went wicketless in the first innings and is yet to bowl in the second. This is a sign in itself that South Africa might add more pace to their already fiery bowling attack in the next test.

Cricket South Africa have also come out with a statement on Rabada’s addition to the squad for the next Test in Johannesburg.

The release said Rabada had “successfully gone through all the COVID-19 and pre-bio-secure environment (BSE) entry protocols and is expected to enter the BSE before the start of the second session today”.

Meanwhile, former South African skipper Faf Du Plessis was dismissed on 199 as South Africa scored a mammoth total of 621 in their first innings in Centurion.
