Vijay Hazare Trophy witnessed one of its most astonishing moments as Karnataka pulled off a jaw-dropping chase of 413 runs against Jharkhand at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. Achieving the target with 15 balls still to spare, Karnataka registered the second-highest successful run chase in the history of List-A cricket. Only South Africa’s legendary 435-run chase against Australia in 2006 stands above this feat. Given the scale of the target and the sustained run rate required throughout the innings, Karnataka’s effort is already being hailed as one of the greatest chases ever seen in Indian domestic cricket.
Padikkal Anchors A Monumental Run Chase
At the heart of this historic pursuit was a sublime innings from Devdutt Padikkal, who produced a masterclass in controlled aggression. The left-hander scored a commanding 147 off 118 deliveries, striking ten boundaries and seven sixes while dictating the tempo of the innings. Despite the asking rate hovering above eight runs per over for long phases, Padikkal never looked rushed. He rotated the strike smartly, punished loose deliveries, and ensured Karnataka stayed in the contest even as pressure mounted. His knock combined composure with power and served as the backbone of the chase, allowing the batters around him to play with freedom.
Supporting Acts Seal A Remarkable Finish
Karnataka’s success was not a one-man show. Captain Mayank Agarwal provided vital early momentum with a fluent half-century, setting the tone during the powerplay. In the middle overs, the explosive Abhinav Manohar chipped in with a brisk 56, keeping the required rate under control and maintaining scoreboard pressure. The finishing touches were applied by debutant Dhruv Prabhakar, whose unbeaten 40 showcased maturity beyond his years as he calmly steered the chase home.
Earlier in the match, Jharkhand had looked firmly in control after skipper Ishan Kishan smashed a blistering century off just 33 balls, the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List-A cricket. His assault powered Jharkhand beyond 400 and seemingly put the game out of reach. What followed, however, was a chase that redefined belief, execution, and batting depth, firmly etching Karnataka’s name into cricketing folklore.
