3 names have emerged to take over India’s T20I vice-captaincy role after Virat Kohli confirmed on Thursday that he will step down as T20I captain after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. The global T20 competition is scheduled to take place between October 17 to November 14 in the UAE and Oman.
A recent report from PTI has suggested that the board is looking at KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah as three options to work as a deputy in the shorter formats. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is all set to take over the T20I captaincy role after the T20 World Cup.

The report has suggested that vacancy for the new vice-captain should go to someone younger, who can then take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma when the time comes given the Mumbaikar is 34-years-old.
“Pant is a serious contender but you can’t rule out KL also as he is an IPL captain. The darkhorse will be Jasprit Bumrah,” the BCCI insider told PTI.
However, BCCI is not in a hurry to announce the vice-captain and wants to take a slow and steady approach. A decision will only be taken after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

Kohli will step down as India’s T20I captain after the T20 World Cup in the UAE next month, he announced on Thursday (September 16) in a statement on Twitter.
“I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the Indian Cricket Team to my utmost capability. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. I couldn’t have done it without them – the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win,” wrote Kohli.
“Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward.

“Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I’ve decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October. I have also spoken to the secretary Mr Jay Shah and the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability,” he added.
Virat Kohli took over the T20I captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017, with his first series being the three T20Is against England in January-February 2017. Till date, Kohli has led India in 45 matches, with 29 wins, 14 losses, and two no results.
