Ahead of the opening ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, stand-in captain KL Rahul expressed that the Indian team would be thrilled if MS Dhoni attended the match at the JSCA Stadium. The venue, Dhoni’s hometown, already adds sentimental value, but Rahul noted that having the legendary former captain in the stands would provide an emotional boost. He recalled making his ODI debut under Dhoni’s leadership in 2016 and acknowledged how special it is to play in a place so deeply connected with him.
Rahul emphasised the shared respect within the team for MS Dhoni, saying, “We’ve all played under him. We’ve been his fans, and we’ve all played together. So we are all friends, and to know someone like MS, it’s a very happy opportunity to know someone as big as MS and someone who is so successful as an Indian player, and we all respect him as a human being.” He added that Dhoni’s presence would energise not just fans but also the players, stating, “So if he also comes to watch the match, not only the crowd, we will get more excited.”
Rahul On His Batting Role And Return Of Senior Stars
KL Rahul confirmed that he will continue to bat at number six, taking on responsibilities similar to Dhoni’s past role as keeper-captain and finisher. He expressed excitement over the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, noting their influence both on and off the field. He said, “I will be batting in the same position. I have been playing at number six since the Champions Trophy.”
Speaking about strike rotation and game awareness, Rahul praised Virat Kohli’s consistency, explaining how much the team learns from him, “Taking singles is as important as hitting boundaries… That’s something Virat has done so well over his career.” Rahul highlighted that the senior duo’s presence brings stability and confidence, noting, “Their importance at any point is huge.”
Jadeja, Gaikwad And Pant, Rahul On Team Combinations
Rahul welcomed Ravindra Jadeja back into the ODI setup, praising his all-round value and championship experience. He remarked that Jadeja’s versatility makes him indispensable and that his return strengthens the balance of the side. Rahul also spoke highly of Ruturaj Gaikwad, acknowledging his talent while also admitting that competition for top-order spots limits opportunities, “Rutu, obviously, is a top-class player… It’s just about the right opportunities and the right timing.” On Rishabh Pant, Rahul clarified that if Pant plays, he will assume wicketkeeping duties, saying, “But if he’s in the XI, he’ll take the gloves and I’ll be in the field.”
