Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer has backed Team India batter KL Rahul, who has been struggling of late in international cricket. He expressed that Rahul that is a much better player than his numbers suggest. The right-handed batter failed to score runs for India in the first two matches of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

KL Rahul managed just four runs against Pakistan, and nine against the Netherlands in the tournament. So far, he averages 29.00 in 12 T20I matches this year, scoring 319 runs at a strike rate of 124.12. The 30-year-old has faced a lot of backlash for his recent form.

However, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer has backed the struggling opener. He pointed out that KL Rahul suffered an injury, after which it is difficult for a player to maintain rhythm. Speaking on ‘BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti’, Jaffer said,

“I think KL Rahul is a much better player than the numbers suggest. If you remember during our previous visit to Australia, he was in top form and after that he got injured and then again he had to come back. Therefore, it a bit difficult to maintain the same rhythm.”

“You know he has been hit by injuries a couple of times. That could probably be one of the reasons, but I mean obviously, the numbers are there and he would like to improve those numbers. He is a phenomenal player in Test cricket and he is even phenomenal in T20Is and One Day Internationals,” he added.

India does not need to be complacent: Wasim Jaffer

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer further expressed that big batters Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav need to perform with big games approaching. He added that India cannot afford to be complacent at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Wasim said,

“We struggled against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma got out cheaply, KL got out cheaply, and Suryakumar Yadav also. Those guys need to come to the party with the big games coming up and today India does not need to be complacent. The Netherlands would come out with people not expecting too much from them, but they would like to be there, they would like to throw punches. So, India needs to be on their guard. They can’t be complacent.”
