Stand-in New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell confirmed that senior all-rounder Kyle Jamieson will be entrusted with leading the pace attack in the opening ODI against India in Vadodara. With New Zealand facing the top-ranked ODI side, Bracewell made it clear that Jamieson’s experience will be crucial in guiding a relatively young bowling group in challenging Indian conditions.
“We have Kyle Jamieson, who’s been around the game a long time and has plenty of experience. I’ll be leaning a lot on him as captain to lead the bowling attack. He’s a very skilful bowler,” Bracewell told the reporters on the eve of the match.
Bracewell also mentioned that the team management is still finalising the playing XI but stressed that the group is clear about its approach for the opening game. He acknowledged that while the squad may lack overall experience, the expectations remain high as New Zealand look to compete strongly in the series.
Kristian Clarke Set For ODI Debut
Bracewell confirmed that 24-year-old Kristian Clarke will make his ODI debut in the first match against India, calling it a rewarding moment for the young pacer after consistent performances at the domestic level. The captain expressed confidence in Clarke’s preparation and praised his efforts during the build-up to the series.
“We’re still working through the last of our (playing) XI, but I can confirm that Kristian Clarke is making his debut tomorrow (Sunday) so it’s an exciting chance for him. We’re really excited about how he’s been bowling in domestic cricket in New Zealand and also in the build-up over here.”
Bracewell noted that New Zealand’s batting unit remains the strongest department of the side, with several experienced players forming the backbone of the lineup. He said this balance allows younger players to gain exposure without excessive pressure.
“If you look at the experience in our side, it’s in the batting department, which is fortunate. We know that our batting side is going to be strong and then there’s plenty of opportunities for young guys to come in,” he said.
Adapting To Indian Conditions And Big Crowds
Bracewell admitted that playing in India presents unique challenges, especially with large crowds and unfamiliar conditions. However, he felt the extended stay in the country has helped the squad adjust and prepare better ahead of the series.
“We perhaps don’t have the experience that we normally have on our side. But in saying that, we come in here with high expectations on how we’re going to play. We want to gain some experience of playing in these conditions and put on a good show for it,” he said.
“There are plenty of distractions over here, that’s for sure… to come here in front of a sold-out crowd of 40,000 is a little bit different for a few guys in the group. (It’s) a new facility so everything seems state-of-the-art and yeah, great facilities. It looks like an absolutely amazing outfield, one thing that stood out to me. I had to pick up some grass and see if it was real,” he added.
