Shubman Gill has made his return to international cricket through the India vs New Zealand ODI series, a significant assignment as it is India’s final ODI series before the team’s focus shifts entirely to T20Is. While Gill is not currently part of the T20I squad, he continues to hold a crucial position in Indian cricket as the captain of the ODI and Test teams. His comeback comes at an important juncture, with the management keen on extracting maximum value from the 50-over format before moving on.
Under Gill’s leadership, the ODI side has continued to rely on senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who remain influential figures in the format. Even as discussions around the future and team balance continue, the emphasis has stayed firmly on performance, experience, and maintaining stability within the group.
Gill Addresses Team Environment Questions
Ahead of the series, Shubman Gill was questioned in the pre-match press conference about reports and opinions surrounding the relationship between senior players and the coaching staff. Responding to the query, Gill firmly put to rest any speculation and spoke positively about the atmosphere within the team.
“I think the team atmosphere is amazing. The players that you named have been in this atmosphere for decades, and they are the people who always try to push Indian cricket forward. And I think even in the last series, you saw how well they performed. So I think the atmosphere in the team is great right now,” Shubman Gill replied.
His response reflected confidence in the group and highlighted the role senior players continue to play, not just through performances but also by setting standards and guiding the team forward. Gill’s words suggested that the dressing room remains united, focused, and driven by shared goals rather than outside narratives.
Experience, Leadership, And Team Balance
Answering another question, Gill spoke about the advantage of having players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad, especially from a captaincy perspective. He explained how their experience becomes invaluable during pressure situations and decision-making moments.
“Among the two players you have named, one is one of the greatest openers (Rohit) of all time in ODIs, and Virat bhai is one of the greatest ODI batsmen ever. So definitely, having these two people in your team makes your life a lot easier, and whenever you are in a challenging situation, you can go to them for input.”
“Because they have often been in those situations, you can go to them to see how they think or what they would do. That piece of information is very valuable for any captain,” Gill said. Gill also underlined that India’s approach remains unchanged regardless of the opposition. “We don’t look at any opposition, since they aren’t at their full strength. We want to play at full strength and find the best combinations.”
