Kumar Dharmasena Admits To His Mistake In The WC Final

The final of the World Cup 2019 will always be remembered as one of the best games till date as both the teams fought till the last moment for the title. Finally, it was the home side of England who was crowned the champions. A disastrous throw that played a huge role in the final over the game turned out to be a game-changing one for the kiwis as they lost the game in the last few minutes.

The throw which was further deflected by the bat of Ben Stokes reached the boundary line and the on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena had no hesitation in granting six runs. Former umpire Simon Taufel who was regarded the best in his times admitted that it was an erroneous decision from the umpires and only five runs should have been given for the same.

Reports suggest that in the latest interview to Sunday times, umpire Dharmasena admitted to the error he has made. He also defended saying that he did not enjoy the privileges of having a TV to suggest replays for arriving at a decision. These words left everyone surprised as that particular call changed the due course of the game.

He also said that he took the decision after consulting with match officials and it wasn”t his call alone. Speaking to local Sunday times he said ” It’s easy for people to comment after seeing TV replays. I agree that there was a judgment error when I see it on TV replays now. But we did not have the luxury of TV replays at the ground and I will never regret the decision I made. Besides, the ICC praised me for the decision I made at that time.”

The match finally went to a super over which was further tied. The matchwinner was decided purely based on the boundary count and it left fans and experts frustrated. Whatever now it”s been a week since that nail-biting final still things aren”t nullified in the minds of cricket enthusiasts. The focus now shifts to several bilateral series which is set to begin this week starting from Bangladesh tour of Srilanka.
