Glamorgan batter Sam Northeast scripted history on Saturday, July 23 in the County Championship Division two game against Leicestershire. He entered an exclusive group of players comprising Brian Laran, Graeme Hick, and AC MacLaren to score 400 runs in an innings in first-class cricket. The 32-year-old slammed 410 not out in the first innings for Glamorgan off just 447 balls.

Sam Northeast did not get a chance to challenge Brian Lara’s world record of 501 runs, as Glamorgan declared the innings on 795/5. Lara had achieved the feat in 1994 playing for the Warwickshire. Northeast came out to bat at a time when his team was reeling at 9/2 in around six overs. However, he steadied the ship for Glamorgan with a 306 runs stand with South Africa’s Colin Ingram, who also slammed a century.

After Ingram’s wicket, the team lost two more wickets in quick succession. However, Glamorgan again managed to put on a huge partnership. Chris Cooke joined Northeast at the crease and the two together scored 461 runs taking Glamorgan’s total to a huge 795, before declaring the innings. Cooke remained unbeaten on 191 but couldn’t get a chance to reach a double-hundred.

Earlier in the match, Leicestershire scored 584 runs in the first innings. At Tea, they are 118 for three wickets, with Wiaan Mulder and Colin Ackermann at the crease in the second innings. The Callum Parkinson-led team is trailing by 93 runs.

Meanwhile, Sam Northeast became the fourth batter to score 400 plus score after Brian Lara, Archie MacLaren (424) in 1895, and Graeme Hick (405) in 1988. He also became the ninth batter overall to reach the 400-run mark in a first-class inning. The Glamorgan batter has scored over 11000 runs in first-class cricket, including 27 centuries.

Let’s take a look at how Twitter reacted to Sam Northeast’s marathon knock:

Taking to Twitter, Kaustubh Gudipati informed that Sam Northeast became the first T20 cricketer to score 400 plus runs in an innings in first-class cricket.
