England fast bowler Mark Wood has been sidelined from cricket for four months following a knee ligament injury sustained during the Champions Trophy. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Wood underwent surgery this week, which revealed significant ligament damage in his left knee. His return is expected by the end of July, ruling him out of England’s Test series against India, with the final Test scheduled to begin on July 31.
The ECB further stated that Wood had been dealing with an ongoing knee issue for over a year. However, the discomfort intensified during England’s group-stage match against Afghanistan. Wood bowled the first 3.4 overs of his spell before requiring treatment, which revealed heavy strapping on his knee.
He managed to complete his fourth over but soon left the field for further medical attention. Despite returning later to bowl four additional overs, he visibly struggled with knee pain and fell multiple times in his follow-through. He finished with figures of 0-50 in eight overs, as England suffered a narrow eight-run loss, which also led to their elimination from the tournament.
Wood Confident About Recovery
Despite the setback, Wood remains optimistic about his recovery. In an official statement, he expressed disappointment over missing a significant portion of cricket but assured fans of his strong comeback.
“I’m gutted to be out for so long after representing England across all formats since the start of last year. But I’ve got every confidence that I’ll be back firing on all cylinders now that I’ve been able to sort my knee out,” Wood said.
He extended his gratitude to the medical team, his England teammates, and fans for their unwavering support. Wood also emphasized his eagerness to contribute to England’s crucial fixtures in 2025.
Recurring Injury Woes for Wood
Wood’s latest injury adds to a history of fitness concerns that have plagued his career. He missed England’s Test tours of Pakistan and New Zealand last year due to an elbow injury. Before that, he was ruled out of the final Test of the 2024 summer against Sri Lanka due to a right thigh strain.

As England looks ahead to a busy cricketing calendar, Wood’s absence will be a significant blow to their bowling attack. However, with a determined recovery plan in place, he aims to return stronger and play a key role in England’s future campaigns.
