Former Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza recently picked the best captain he ever played against in his career. Mortaza said Sourav Ganguly was the best captain and said he was different from the rest. He also picked Ricky Ponting and MS Dhoni as the best skippers after Ganguly.
Ganguly after becoming the captain completely changed India cricket forever. He developed a never say die attitude in the Indian team which made them a force in world cricket. Whereas both Ponting and Dhoni are world cup winning captains for their respective countries. Ponting is the only one of two men that has won two 50-over world cups as captain. Dhoni has led India to glory in the 2011 world cup when India lifted the world cup after 28 years.
Ganguly is the best captain: Mashrafe Mortaza
Mortaza is considered the greatest ever captain of Bangladesh. Under his leadership, Bangladesh qualified for the knockout stage for the very first time in world cup history. In 2015, Bangladesh defeated England to qualify for their first quarter-final when Mortaza was the captain.
The former fast bowler Mortaza rated Habibul Bashar as the best Bangladeshi captain. He stated that he has heard about Imran Khan a lot but never got see him captaining much. From the ones, he saw he named Ganguly, Ponting and Dhoni as best leaders.
In a recent interview with Business Standard he said, “As a captain, I never followed anyone. Sumon (Habibul Bashar) is the best skipper from Bangladesh. If I had to pick from the entire world, I will go for Sourav Ganguly. I heard a lot about Imran Khan, but didn’t get to see him much”.
MS Dhoni is my No. 3
He added, “From the ones I have seen, I would pick Ricky Ponting, though everyone may say that he was lucky to get a strong team. But I will say that the team needed to be taken care of even with big names. There are a lot of players, who had records similar to Ponting. They needed to be managed as well.”
“So, after Ponting and Ganguly I’ll go for MS Dhoni. I have seen Dhoni throughout his career. These are my best three. Among them, Ganguly was very different and I would be placing him ahead of Dhoni and Ponting”, Mashrafe Mortaza concluded.
