Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar reckons the Indian team is waiting for the right moment to unleash Umran Malik. The pacer impressed the experts and the fans with his performance in the Indian Premier League 2022.
Umran Malik picked 22 wickets in the 14 games and played a key role for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He won the Emerging Player of the Tournament award. The 22-year-old’s raw pace, consistently clocking the 150kmph mark, troubled the batters. He earned a maiden India call-up for the T20I series against South Africa. However, could not get a game in the series.
In an interview with the Telegraph, former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar expressed that Umran Malik deserves to be playing for India. However, he added that the Indian team might be waiting for the right opportunity to give him his debut cap. Vengsarkar said:
“It’s not fair for me to comment since I’m not part of the team management. Not playing Umran immediately could be part of the team strategy. You never know… Maybe they are waiting to unleash him at the right opportunity.”Â
“Everybody has a different outlook on the game. But I feel he deserves to play after showing that kind of speed and accuracy in the IPL. Also when you are playing (international cricket) at home, that’s the right time to test somebody like him,” he added.

Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar further expressed that Umran Malik is an exciting prospect and has the right aggression of a fast bowler. He added that the last time he got as excited about a player as Umran Malik, was Sachin Tendulkar. Dilip Vengsarkar said,
“He is one of the most exciting prospects I have seen in the last 10 years. I hope he does well because he looks very fit, and he has that aggression of a fast bowler. He has got pace and accuracy. I think he should be able to play for India for a long time.”
“The last time, I am trying to think… The last time I got really excited at seeing an Indian Player was Sachin Tendulkar…when Sachin Tendulkar…you know young Indian. And after that, I got excited watching Umran Malik,” he concluded.
