The much-anticipated decision regarding the central contracts for the Indian men’s cricket team has been put on hold. Despite widespread media reports suggesting a high-profile Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) meeting on Saturday, it has now been confirmed that no such meeting ever took place. The decision-making process has thus been deferred, leaving many cricketers and fans awaiting clarity on the future structure of player retainership.
The Meeting That Didn’t Happen
Several reports had indicated that a crucial meeting involving key BCCI stakeholders was scheduled to take place in Guwahati. However, sources close to the board have clarified that no such meeting was planned. The speculation surrounding the meeting was primarily fueled by expectations regarding contract renewals and adjustments.
The anticipated meeting was expected to feature chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. While Gambhir recently returned from an overseas holiday, he was reportedly in Delhi on Saturday. There was no confirmation of Agarkar traveling to Guwahati, adding further doubt to the claims of a scheduled discussion.
Current Status of Player Retainership
Just last week, the BCCI announced the annual player retainership for the 2024-25 season. However, the finer details of player grades and any potential promotions or demotions remain undecided. The delay suggests that the board is still evaluating player performances before making a final call.
Possible Changes in the Contracts
A major talking point has been the likely return of Shreyas Iyer to the central contracts. Iyer was excluded last year due to his failure to meet domestic cricket commitments, but his reintegration seems imminent. Conversely, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to be removed from the Grade A list following his retirement from international cricket.
One player who stands to benefit from the current BCCI retainership rules is Varun Chakaravarthy. The leg-spinner played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy victory in Dubai and meets the board’s eligibility criteria. With 4 ODIs and 12 T20Is in the past 12 months, he is set to secure a Grade C contract.
According to BCCI rules, “athletes who meet the criteria of playing a minimum of 3 Tests, 8 ODIs, or 10 T20Is within the specified period will automatically be included in Grade C on a pro-rata basis.”
Apart from those changes, the contracts will mostly remain the same. The flexible Grade C, which previously included 15 players, will see adjustments. Last year, there were 30 players under retainership, with four in Grade A+, six in Grade A, and five in Grade B.
Coaching Staff Performance Review
Whenever the postponed meeting takes place, one of the key discussions will revolve around the performance of the Indian team’s coaching staff. While specifics remain undisclosed, it is expected that the roles of two major coaching personnel will come under scrutiny.

Upcoming BCCI Meetings and IPL Influence
While no official date has been set for the final contract decision, it is expected that the BCCI will convene soon after the conclusion of the IPL. The tournament serves as a vital platform for assessing players’ form and fitness, which could influence final selections.
