Not Personal: Kagiso Rabada Reveals the Real Reason Behind His IPL 2025 Absence
Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada shocked the cricketing world—not with his pace or match-winning spells, but with his sudden exit from the IPL. Initially citing a “significant personal matter,” Rabada later revealed that he had tested positive for recreational drug use during the SA20 earlier this year. His departure from Gujarat Titans was not a personal decision—it was a disciplinary action.

Timeline of the Incident

In January-February 2025, Rabada represented MI Cape Town in the SA20. It was during this tournament that the failed drug test reportedly occurred. However, it wasn’t until weeks later that the consequences unfolded publicly. Just a few weeks into the IPL, Rabada left India. Gujarat Titans released a carefully-worded statement citing a “significant personal matter,” giving no hint of the looming scandal.

The Truth Revealed

Rabada admitted he tested positive for a recreational drug. While the exact substance hasn’t been officially confirmed, ESPNcricinfo and other sources suggest it’s not performance-enhancing—just prohibited. A provisional suspension is a temporary ban while a case is being reviewed. It’s not a final verdict, but it means the player can’t participate in matches until a decision is made. Rabada is currently under this status.

Rabada’s Public Statement

In a heartfelt statement through SACA, he admitted his mistake, took full responsibility, and expressed regret for letting down fans, teammates, and the game itself. He emphasized that cricket is a privilege, not a right, and vowed to come back stronger.

Rabada said in his statement, “As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons. This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug. I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations. I am serving a provisional suspension and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing.

He further stated, “I couldn’t have gone through this alone. I’d like to thank my agent, CSA, and Gujarat Titans for their support. I’d also like to thank SACA and my legal team for their guidance and counsel. Most importantly I’d like to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love. Moving forward, this moment will not define me. I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft.”

South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA)

SACA played a pivotal role in guiding Rabada through the process. They’ve stood by him while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality. SAIDS oversees doping compliance and is a WADA signatory. Their statement is still pending, but they will ultimately determine the length and nature of Rabada’s sanction. WADA has clear policies: even recreational drug use is punishable under anti-doping codes, though rehabilitation and education are increasingly being emphasized over punishment.

Sanctions and Comparisons

In 2021, powerlifter Matt Bekker got a one-month ban for THC. New Zealand’s Doug Bracewell was banned for cocaine use but had his sanction reduced after completing a treatment program. Sources close to the case suggest Rabada’s penalty could be similar—perhaps a one-month suspension, with a reduced sentence if he complies with treatment protocols.
