Rohit Sharma, India’s ODI captain, reflected on how a rare extended break from international cricket helped him return stronger during the ODI series against Australia. After finishing as India’s top run-getter in the series, Rohit revealed that the four to five months away from the game gave him a chance to reset both mentally and physically.
Having played continuously for over a decade, such a long gap was unprecedented for the star opener. “Since the time I started playing, I never had four to five months to prepare for a series, so I wanted to utilise that. I wanted to do things in my own way, on my own terms, and that actually worked out pretty well for me.”
He added :
“Understanding what I need to do for the rest of my career, it was important to utilise that time because, like I said, I never had such time in my hand. I prepared pretty well back home. Obviously, the conditions back home and here are not ideal. It’s a massive difference between the two countries, but I’ve come here so many times. So it was just about getting into that rhythm and understanding what I need to do here.”
Composed Ton Anchors India’s Sydney Victory
Rohit’s preparation and patience bore fruit in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where he delivered a match-winning 121 not out off 125 balls to guide India to a successful chase of 237. His calm and assured innings not only saved India from a whitewash but also underlined his ability to lead from the front.
The opener first built a solid 69-run partnership with Shubman Gill (24) before joining Virat Kohli (74* off 81 balls) for an unbroken 168-run stand that took India home comfortably. The combination of Rohit’s experience and Kohli’s resilience reminded fans of India’s seasoned batting strength. The skipper also praised young pacer Harshit Rana, who took 4/39 in a breakthrough spell, saying, “Looking at how he bowled, it was a fantastic effort from him.”
Gratitude and Perspective Post-Series
Despite losing the series, Rohit Sharma expressed deep gratitude toward the fans and acknowledged the support his team received throughout the tour. His composed reflection on the series highlighted the importance of perspective and preparation, reinforcing why he remains an indispensable pillar of India’s ODI setup even after stepping away from the other formats.
He said :
“Very, very grateful, firstly, to have people standing beside you. Whenever we’ve played, people have come out and supported, not just the two of us but the entire team… The crowd never disappoints. Unfortunately, we couldn’t cross the line with the series, but we enjoyed coming and playing here and are really, really grateful to the crowd for their support throughout Australia.”
