Indian batter Devdutt Padikkal has finally addressed his exclusion from the ODI squad for the upcoming India–New Zealand series, choosing composure over frustration. Despite delivering a prolific domestic season, the left-hander was not named in the selectors’ plans for the three-match series, sparking debate among fans and experts.
Padikkal admitted that he did keep an eye on the selection announcement but was realistic about the situation. “Yes, I was looking at the selection and seeing what would come out,” he said, while also acknowledging the depth of talent competing for limited spots in India’s one-day setup.
Rather than expressing disappointment, Padikkal underlined that he understands how competitive selection has become at the international level.
Heavy Competition in India’s Batting Line-Up
Padikkal highlighted that India’s ODI team is packed with established performers and in-form players, making selection extremely challenging. “There are so many batters in the line and everyone has been doing really well. And it’s not that easy to push into that one-day side,” he explained. His comments reflect a mature outlook, recognizing that strong performances alone do not always guarantee immediate opportunities.
Even after scoring heavily in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Padikkal believes timing and team balance play a crucial role in selection calls. He reiterated that his focus remains on consistency and improvement rather than external factors beyond his control.
Adapting Game and Staying Ready
The Karnataka batter also spoke about how his game has evolved over the years, particularly his transition across formats. He noted that early in his career, his approach was more aligned with red-ball cricket, but exposure to T20 leagues helped him adapt to faster scoring demands.
Padikkal credited guidance from coaches for helping him find the right tempo, especially in white-ball cricket. Speaking about his comfort in the 50-over format, he explained that ODIs allow him to balance patience with controlled aggression, which suits his natural style.
As India prepare to take on New Zealand in the upcoming ODI series, Padikkal remains focused on doing what he can control—scoring runs and staying prepared. His calm response suggests a player confident that continued performances will eventually reopen the doors to international selection.
