Pakistan Cricket In Crisis, Leadership Changes On The Horizon: Reports

Pakistan cricket is once again facing turmoil after failing to qualify for the knockout stage of an ICC tournament. Despite numerous changes in the team’s leadership, including captains and support staff, the results have been disappointing. The latest setback has intensified scrutiny on the leadership group, with reports suggesting that head coach Aaqib Javed is set to be replaced. This potential shake-up reflects the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) ongoing search for stability and success in international cricket.

Saqlain Mushtaq Set to Take Over as Head Coach

According to Pakistani journalist Qadir Khawaja, former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is the frontrunner to replace Aaqib Javed as Pakistan’s head coach. Khawaja revealed that Mushtaq has already accepted the offer after meeting with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. His first challenge is expected to be Pakistan’s upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand.

Interestingly, Mushtaq was previously offered the role before the 2025 Champions Trophy but declined at the time. However, following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the tournament, the PCB appears determined to take a new direction, hoping that the former cricketing legend can bring the team back on track.

Uncertainty Over Captaincy and Squad Selection

Speculation is also growing regarding Mohammad Rizwan’s future as Pakistan’s white-ball captain. While some are calling for his removal, he is expected to remain in charge for now, as Pakistan secured back-to-back bilateral series victories against South Africa and Australia under his leadership.

Additionally, reports suggest that several senior players may opt out of the New Zealand tour due to fears of being dropped from the squad. As a result, Pakistan might field a squad dominated by young talents, signaling a potential transition phase in the team’s composition.

With Pakistan cricket at a crossroads, the upcoming changes in leadership and squad selection could define the team’s future trajectory. If Saqlain Mushtaq officially takes over as head coach, his experience and strategic insights will be crucial in rebuilding the squad and restoring consistency.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan’s captaincy remains a debated topic, but his recent successes might earn him more time at the helm. The New Zealand series could serve as a testing ground for Pakistan’s younger players, offering a glimpse into the team’s long-term vision. As the PCB looks to usher in a new era, only time will tell whether these changes will lead to the revival of Pakistan cricket on the global stage.
