Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins remains cautiously optimistic about his chances of returning to action for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, even after a long-running injury disrupted his recent schedule. The Australian pace bowler and leader has been sidelined for several months due to a lingering back problem and was ultimately unavailable for Australia’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026.

The injury, which affected his involvement in international cricket and limited his competitive outings, has forced Cummins into a careful recovery plan. Despite this, he has expressed hope that he can heal in time to lead his IPL franchise.

Reflecting on his situation, Cummins acknowledged the frustration of missing out on marquee events, saying, “It was really unfortunate. I feel pretty good, just a minor setback and just ran out of time really. I’ll rest up for a few weeks and go from there.” His focus now lies on allowing his body the necessary rest to properly mend, rather than rushing back prematurely.

Recovery Strategy and Timeline

Cummins has been working closely with medical staff to monitor the progress of his back. He explained that while initial expectations projected a relatively short recovery window, further assessments revealed that he would require more time to ensure complete healing. After an initial estimate of four weeks of rest following the Adelaide Ashes Test, subsequent scans suggested the bone needed an extended period before he could start intensive training again.

On his return prospects, he was candid about the pace and nature of his recovery, noting that his future involvement in competitive games will be “guided by my back.” His approach is to proceed with caution, subject to how upcoming scans look, rather than setting hard deadlines. “We’ll have another scan in a few weeks, and if it’s good, then we’ll have a slow build-up,” he said, highlighting a deliberate and measured rehabilitation effort.

Cummins also pointed out that shorter-format cricket might be less demanding to prepare for than long-form matches, adding that “T20s are a little bit easier to get up for, that’s why I was so close to getting up for this World Cup.” This suggests that, if all goes well with his back, he may be able to transition back via limited-overs cricket.

Long-Term Outlook and Caution

With a demanding international calendar ahead, including major Test and ODI series, Cummins is determined to prioritise his long-term fitness over short-term returns. His latest comments underline a preference for managing his body wisely and avoiding further injury setbacks that could jeopardise future commitments.

By pacing his recovery carefully and keeping communication open with medical and coaching staff, he aims to be fully prepared for the rigours of professional cricket — potentially with the IPL as the next key milestone if his back allows it.
