The issue of India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, slated to be held in Pakistan, has sparked discussions between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Mohsin Naqvi, the newly appointed chairman of the PCB, is keen on securing assurance from Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, regarding India’s presence in the tournament.
This matter is expected to be on the agenda during the upcoming ICC meeting in Dubai. However, given that the Champions Trophy is still almost a year away, it’s unlikely that any definitive commitments will be made by the BCCI at this stage. The complexities surrounding international cricket fixtures, coupled with the diplomatic considerations involved in India-Pakistan cricket relations, make it challenging to reach swift resolutions.
The PCB is well aware of the hurdles it faces in ensuring India’s participation, especially in light of previous issues such as the ‘Hybrid Model’ implemented during the last Asia Cup. The ‘Hybrid Model’ was necessitated by India’s inability to play matches in Pakistan due to government non-clearance. This led to a sharing formula where some matches were held in Pakistan while others took place in Sri Lanka.
Consequently, the PCB is eager to avoid a similar scenario for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Naqvi believes that securing early confirmation of India’s participation would not only provide clarity but also aid in promoting the tournament effectively. To support his case, Naqvi plans to highlight the recent political developments in Pakistan, including the completion of elections and the formation of a new government.
He aims to reassure the BCCI that there are no significant security or logistical concerns in hosting international cricket events in Pakistan. Additionally, Naqvi intends to present updates on the ongoing upgrades to stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, showcasing Pakistan’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities for visiting teams.
However, the BCCI maintains that the decision regarding India’s participation ultimately lies with the Indian government. Any assurances or commitments from the BCCI would be contingent upon clearance from the relevant authorities in India. Thus, while Naqvi is hopeful of securing early assurances, the BCCI’s stance underscores the need for patience and diplomatic maneuvering in navigating the complexities of cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan.
