“Players Must Adapt And Move Forward”- R Ashwin’s Bold Take On Saliva Ban After Shami’s 2025 CT Remarks

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin stated that bowlers might have to accept the ICC’s decision to ban saliva use on the ball. His comments came after pacer Mohammad Shami expressed disappointment over the rule change, citing a decline in reverse swing.

The ICC implemented the ban during the COVID-19 pandemic due to transmission concerns but allowed players to use sweat to shine the ball. However, many have found it ineffective, as the ball tends to lose potency and soften.

Ravichandran Ashwin explained that the ICC is hesitant to reinstate saliva use, as their research suggests it does not significantly aid reverse swing.

“ICC released some papers after research showed that saliva did not aid reverse swing much, not putting saliva on the ball has not made a huge difference. I do not know how they did the research, but saliva should be allowed again if it is not a problem. Otherwise, cricketers have to get on with it,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel ‘Ash ki Baat.’

In the modern 50-over format, two balls are used from each end, keeping them in good condition even in the later stages of an innings, which limits the impact of reverse swing. However, in Test cricket, where a single ball is used for up to 80 overs, reverse swing still has the potential to play a significant role.

On abrasive pitches and rough outfields, the ball tends to wear out quickly, making reverse swing more effective.

“We are consistently requesting permission to use saliva”- Mohammed Shami

Fast bowlers are struggling to remain effective after the initial swing with the new ball fades within a few overs. As a result, they rely on variations and pitch assistance to make an impact during the middle overs.

“We are trying to reverse but you are not getting the use of saliva into the game. We are constantly appealing to allow the use of saliva and it will be interesting with the reverse swing,” Shami told reporters after Team India’s 2025 Champions Trophy semifinal win over Australia (via TOI).
