Prithvi Shaw Smashes Century Against His Former Team Mumbai In Ranji Warm-up Match

Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw sent a powerful reminder of his talent and ambitions to the BCCI selectors by smashing an unbeaten century (100 off 140 balls)* against his former team, Mumbai, in a three-day practice match at the MCA Stadium in Gahunje. This match marked Shaw’s first appearance against Mumbai since shifting allegiance to Maharashtra ahead of the new domestic season.

The young opener, who once represented Mumbai and even captained them at the junior level, showcased both patience and skill as he anchored Maharashtra’s innings, making a strong case for a national comeback.

A Dominant Partnership and Aggressive Start

Opening the innings alongside Arshin Kulkarni, Shaw was part of a dominant performance as the duo stitched together a remarkable 305-run stand in just 49.4 overs. While Shaw played a composed and technically sound innings, Kulkarni unleashed an aggressive assault, scoring 186 off 140 balls, decorated with 33 fours and 4 sixes.

Their partnership put Maharashtra in a commanding position early in the match and demonstrated the team’s batting depth heading into the upcoming domestic season. Shaw’s measured approach, contrasted with Kulkarni’s attacking intent, was a testament to his evolving game — one that now balances aggression with responsibility.

New Beginnings After Leaving Mumbai

Prithvi Shaw’s performance carried extra significance because of the context. Having made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2016-17, Shaw quickly rose through the ranks, making his Test debut for India in 2018-19. However, after several ups and downs in his career — including form slumps and selection setbacks — Shaw decided to part ways with Mumbai before the 2024-25 season.

Alongside experienced all-rounder Jalaj Saxena, he joined Maharashtra, seeking a fresh start and more consistent opportunities. This century against his former teammates, therefore, was more than just a good innings — it was a statement of intent.

Looking Ahead to the Ranji Season

With the domestic season approaching, both teams are gearing up for a competitive campaign. Mumbai, a record 42-time Ranji Trophy champion, will announce their squad around October 10 or 11 and begin their season against Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar (October 15-18).

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, placed in Elite Group B, will face Kerala in their opener in Thiruvananthapuram during the same period. Shaw’s return to form could be a game-changer for Maharashtra’s season and potentially reopen the doors to national selection, proving that the 25-year-old still has plenty to offer Indian cricket.
