The current head coach of the India men’s cricket team, Rahul Dravid, has a contract extension that expires after the T20 World Cup. The BCCI has opened applications for the position. The internationally renowned batter, Dravid, was given an extension to his contract, which was set to expire after the 2023 ODI World Cup, but he is now unwilling to stay in the position for personal reasons.

Applications must be submitted by May 27, 2024. If the batting icon wishes to continue leading the Rohit-led team as head coach, he will need to reapply. After the T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean concludes on July 1, India’s next head coach will assume leadership of the senior team. The head coach of India’s tenure will end on December 31, 2027.

Dravid has previously stated that he will not be requesting an extension for personal reasons, according to a Sportstar article. Before the commencement of the IPL 2024 in March, the Indian head coach shared with the BCCI’s higher authorities the importance of family time.

Dravid was also persuaded to continue leading Team India for a minimum of another year by a group of seasoned players. After the T20 World Cup, Dravid is eager to leave the men’s team, though.

Rahul Dravid says no, BCCI should look for a new head coach:

Rahul Dravid, the current head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, has notified the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his desire to step down after the end of India’s T20 World Cup campaign in June. The team will name a new coach shortly.

The Hindu is aware that Dravid made it clear well in advance that he would not be requesting any additional extensions for personal reasons when his contract expired at the end of the 2023 World Cup. Indeed, a number of the squad’s senior players had asked him to think about leading the Test team for a year or more, but Dravid had already made up his mind.

The BCCI might have thought about using different coaches for limited-over and test-match setups if Dravid had given his consent. But as Shah announced last week, there will only be one head coach for all versions, and he will serve as such through the end of 2027.

It is also improbable that V.V.S. Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy, will get involved, despite rumors and expectations to the contrary.

It might require the BCCI to meet with the senior players before hiring a foreign coach. A few head coaches of IPL franchises who have long been involved in the T20 tournament have received hate mail. None of them have indicated that they would like to apply for the position thus far.
