The Rajasthan Royals have announced their retentions for the upcoming 2021 IPL season. A decision to not retain their skipper Steve Smith was taken as the Royals franchise looks to rebuild a fresh team after achieving below par results in the 2020 season where they yet again finished in the bottom four.

In the 11 seasons of IPL Royals have been a part of, they have just managed to qualify for the playoffs thrice, of which one of the seasons they went on to win the title which came in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008. As per their retentions, they will be looking to announce a new captain for the 2021 season.

Rajasthan Royals Retentions

The Rajasthan Royals franchise has named Sanju Samson as their captain for the 2021 season, releasing Steve Smith from the squad. Oshane Thomas, Varun Aaron, Tom Curran and Ankit Rajpoot are the other notable players being released by Rajasthan Royals.

Sanju Samson will now captain a group of expireineced indivuals ranging from Ben Stokes to Jofra Archer to Jos Buttler to Robin Uthappa. Jaydev Unadkat who was expected to be released has also been retained. While youngster Akash Singh was released, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kartik Tyagi and Riyan Parag are the young players to be retained in the squad.

Despite Manan Vohra and David Miller not getting multiple opportunities in the previous season, they have managed to hold on their place. With Smith being released, Rajasthan will look to invest their money onto another match winner in the T20 format. Players like Dawid Malan and Tom Banton can be excellent additions to the squad given that they’ve released Steve Smith.
