BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla extended his best wishes to Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer, who recently suffered a laceration injury to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The incident occurred in the 30th over of the first innings when Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey mistimed his shot, sending the ball high into the air. Iyer sprinted from the backward point and completed a superb catch to dismiss Carey, ending a 59-run partnership with Matthew Renshaw.
However, the celebration turned into concern as Iyer landed awkwardly, injuring his left side. He was visibly in pain, and after medical assistance arrived, he walked off the field with staff support. Expressing his admiration for Iyer’s determination, Rajeev Shukla wrote on X, “Wishing @ShreyasIyer15 a quick recovery. His unwavering spirit and commitment to the game are truly admirable. Looking forward to seeing him back on the field soon, stronger than ever.”
BCCI Issues Official Update On Iyer’s Condition
Following the on-field injury, Shreyas Iyer was immediately taken to a hospital in Sydney for further medical evaluation. On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement providing clarity on his health status. The board confirmed that Iyer had sustained a “laceration injury to the spleen” and assured that he is “under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”
The statement added that the BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists from both Sydney and India, continues to monitor his condition closely. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the Indian team doctor will stay in Sydney with Iyer to assess his day-to-day recovery progress. This update came as a relief to fans and teammates who had expressed deep concern over his health.

Iyer’s Contributions During The ODI Series
Before the unfortunate incident, Shreyas Iyer had been in solid form throughout the ODI series, playing an important role as vice-captain under skipper Shubman Gill. Despite India’s 2-1 series defeat against Australia, Iyer’s performance stood out. He accumulated 72 runs in two matches, including a gritty 77-ball 61 in the second ODI in Adelaide, where he also shared a crucial century partnership with Rohit Sharma.
His commitment on the field, particularly the effort leading to his injury, showcased his fearless approach and team-first attitude. As the Indian cricket community rallies around him, hopes remain high that Iyer will make a strong and swift recovery to return to the game he loves with renewed strength and determination.
