The shocking incident occurred on Khajrana Road, where the players were reportedly harassed by a motorcycle-borne man while heading from their hotel to a nearby café.
The accused, identified as Aqeel Khan, was swiftly apprehended by Madhya Pradesh Police after an extensive manhunt. In the aftermath, tournament organisers and local authorities implemented stricter security measures around hotels, practice venues, and stadiums in Navi Mumbai, the site for both the India–Australia semi-final and the tournament final.

The post served as a subtle yet powerful reminder of the new reality surrounding players’ safety following the disturbing event.
The incident reportedly took place around 11 a.m. last Thursday, sending shockwaves through the team. Security officer Danny Simmons recounted that he received an emergency message and live location from the distressed players, one of whom called him in tears to explain the ordeal. Simmons immediately dispatched a vehicle to ensure their safe return to the hotel, marking a swift and coordinated response from the team’s management.
Swift Police Action Leads To Arrest
A bystander’s alertness proved crucial in the investigation, as the suspect’s bike number helped police trace him using CCTV footage. Acting on a complaint filed by Danny Simmons, the MIG Police Station registered an FIR and initiated a city-wide manhunt involving five police stations—Vijay Nagar, MIG, Khajrana, Pardeshipura, and Kanadiya.
Within six hours, Aqeel Khan, a resident of Khajrana with a history of criminal activity, was arrested from Azad Nagar. Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed the arrest, stating that the accused was identified through CCTV and detained promptly. He also mentioned that authorities were reviewing potential lapses in security protocols. The rapid response and coordinated efforts of the police have been commended, though the incident continues to raise serious concerns about player safety during international sporting events.
