Ranji Trophy Final: Thakur’s All-Round Performance Saves Mumbai Despite Rahane and Iyer’s Failures
Mumbai beat Tamil Nadu to qualify for Ranji Trophy finals

In the Ranji Trophy final, experienced batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane continued their disappointing form, but Mumbai found a savior in all-rounder Shardul Thakur against a resilient Vidarbha side. Despite Rahane and Iyer’s failures, Thakur’s remarkable performance on the opening day revived Mumbai’s hopes.

Thakur’s aggressive 75 off just 69 balls not only bolstered Mumbai’s below-par first innings total but also provided crucial breakthroughs with the ball, including the dismissal of veteran opener Dhruv Shorey. By stumps, Vidarbha found themselves struggling at 31/3, trailing by 193 runs in the first innings.

In his farewell first-class match, Dhawal Kulkarni’s late outswingers accounted for crucial wickets, including those of Aman Mokhade and Karun Nair. However, Mumbai’s solid start crumbled dramatically with Rahane and Iyer both departing for single-digit scores, leaving Mumbai in a precarious position at 111/6.

Despite Rahane’s leadership credentials, his dismal run in the Ranji Trophy persists, raising questions about his future in the team. Similarly, Iyer’s struggles continue, highlighting concerns about his technique. Umesh Yadav’s erratic bowling troubled Mumbai’s top order, with Iyer falling victim to a lack of footwork.

Vidarbha’s early success was fueled by Yash Thakur’s breakthrough, followed by disciplined bowling from Harsh Dubey. Musheer Khan’s promising start was cut short by a rash shot, further denting Mumbai’s innings. Mumbai’s middle-order collapse was alleviated momentarily by Thakur’s aggressive batting, but the lack of support from the lower order ultimately led to Mumbai’s downfall.

Thakur’s valiant effort, comprising a brisk 75 runs laced with boundaries and sixes, showcased his prowess as an all-rounder. However, Mumbai’s batting depth was tested as wickets fell in quick succession towards the end. Despite Thakur’s heroics, Mumbai’s inability to capitalize on his momentum highlights the team’s dependence on individual brilliance rather than collective contribution.
