Shubman Gill’s sensational performance during the five-Test series against England in 2025 not only helped India secure a memorable series win but also saw him rewrite history. Taking charge as captain for the first time in a full Test series, Gill led from the front with the bat, amassing an astounding 754 runs.
This made him the highest run-scorer by an Indian captain in any Test series, surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s 732. It also placed him second on the all-time list of runs scored in a single series by a captain, behind only Don Bradman’s 810.
Gill’s remarkable tally also made him the top-scoring visiting captain in England, overtaking the previous record held by West Indies great Garry Sobers. Moreover, his 754 runs are now the second-highest by any Indian in a Test series, just 20 short of Gavaskar’s iconic 774 in 1971. The sheer consistency of his scoring stood out, as every time he crossed the 50-run mark, he went on to convert it into a century.
Record-Breaking Innings and Milestones
Among the standout moments was Gill’s breathtaking performance at Edgbaston, where he scored 269 in the first innings and followed it up with 161 in the second. His match aggregate of 430 runs is now the highest by an Indian in a single Test, surpassing Gavaskar’s 344. This feat also placed him in elite company—becoming only the second batter in Test history after Allan Border to score both a double century and a 150-plus in the same match.
Gill also equaled the record for most centuries by a captain in a bilateral Test series with four tons, matching greats like Bradman and Gavaskar. He shares the record for the second-most centuries in any bilateral Test series overall.
His 269-run knock is now the highest by an Indian captain in England, overtaking Virat Kohli’s best of 254* (though Kohli’s was at home), and it also became the highest score by an Asian captain in SENA countries.
A Landmark Series for India’s Young Captain
Beyond the personal records, Gill’s leadership and batting prowess proved instrumental in India’s series triumph. His ability to anchor the innings and dominate bowling attacks under pressure solidified his status as one of modern cricket’s elite.
By the end of the series, he had not only cemented his position as a leader but also etched his name into the history books with one of the greatest Test series performances ever by an Indian.
